Notepad
The Notepad is a shared live note-taking workspace for the entire team. It runs in real time during rehearsal — every note written by any team member is immediately visible to everyone else on the network. Notes are automatically linked to the current timecode and scene name so you always know exactly where in the show they were written.
There are two views: the full Notepad for desktop or tablet use, and Notepad Quick Entry (/notepad/entry) for mobile devices.
Header Bar
Section titled “Header Bar”The sticky header at the top of the page is always visible while you scroll through notes. It shows:
- Timecode or Scene Name — the current running timecode (HH:MM:SS:FF). Switch to scene name via the menu.
- Note input field — where you type your note and press Enter to save it.
- Clock status icon — only visible when the timecode connection is unstable.
Typing a Note
Section titled “Typing a Note”Click in the note input field and start typing. As soon as you type the first character, the current timecode and scene name are captured and locked — this is the reference point saved with the note. The capture happens when you start typing, not when you finish, so the note reflects where you were in the show when the thought occurred.
Press Enter to save. The field clears, shows a brief confirmation, and the note appears immediately in the list.
Changing the timecode before saving
Section titled “Changing the timecode before saving”Tap the clock icon inside the input field to open the timecode picker:
- Current Timecode — re-captures the current running timecode
- Generic (No Timecode) — saves the note without a timecode, in the Generic Notes section at the top
- Any scene/range from the list — assigns the note to the start of that scene
Assigning a note to a list while typing
Section titled “Assigning a note to a list while typing”Type >listname anywhere in the text to route the note to a specific department list. The list name is detected in real time and shown as a chip. When saved, the tag is stripped from the text and the note is filed under the matching list automatically.
Examples: >light the backlight is too bright or check the radio mic >sound.
Keyboard shortcuts
Section titled “Keyboard shortcuts”- Escape — clears the captured timecode (sets note to Generic) if one is set; otherwise clears the text
- Delete / Backspace on an empty field — releases the captured timecode back to unset
- Any keystroke while focus is elsewhere on the page — automatically refocuses the input field
Note List
Section titled “Note List”Notes are sorted by timecode, then by creation time. They are grouped under scene/range headers matching the defined ranges. Notes without a timecode appear under Generic Notes at the top.
Each note row shows:
- Checkbox — tap to mark the note as done. Done notes are dimmed and struck through, and disappear after a configurable window (default: 5 minutes).
- Flag — tap to add a colored flag. The color is set in your preferences.
- View icon — opens the full detail view. Changes to a chat icon when remarks are present; hovering shows a preview.
- Timecode chip — hover to see the scene name.
- Note text
- Author chip — who wrote the note and when (relative time). Changes to the resolver’s name when done.
Double-click any note to open its detail view.
Note Detail View
Section titled “Note Detail View”The detail view lets you view and edit all fields of a note: text, timecode, scene, list assignment, flag color, done status (with resolver and timestamp), and remarks. You can also jump to a linked recording from the detail view.
Range / Scene Header
Section titled “Range / Scene Header”Clicking a scene/range header opens a range detail panel showing the scene name, start timecode, and any recordings that were running during that range.
Note Lists (Department Tabs)
Section titled “Note Lists (Department Tabs)”If your show has multiple note lists (e.g. Light, Sound, Stage), tabs appear below the header. Each list only shows its own notes. The input field uses your currently selected tab as the default list, unless overridden with >listname.
Notepad Quick Entry
Section titled “Notepad Quick Entry”The Quick Entry view (/notepad/entry) is recommended for phones during rehearsal. It replaces the scrollable note list with Quick Note Buttons — pre-configured short phrases you can send with a single tap. Each button instantly creates a note timestamped to the current timecode.
Quick note buttons are configured in the Quick Entry preferences.
The note input works identically to the full Notepad, including all keyboard shortcuts and >list syntax.
Preferences
Section titled “Preferences”Notepad preferences
Section titled “Notepad preferences”| Preference | Description |

Section titled “Quick Entry preferences”| Preference | Description |

Real-time Collaboration
Section titled “Real-time Collaboration”All notes are shared in real time across all connected clients. When any team member saves a note, it appears instantly on every other device. Changes (flagging, resolving, editing) are also pushed to all clients immediately.
If you lose the network connection, the Notepad shows a connection indicator. Notes written while offline cannot be saved until the connection is restored.
- Keep it open during rehearsal. Keep the Notepad on a tablet or laptop at the production table. Use Quick Entry on your phone if you need to move around.
- Use lists to separate departments. Note lists keep department notes isolated — sound notes only show in the Sound tab.
- Route notes on the fly. The
>listshortcut is the fastest way to file a note to a different department without switching tabs first. - Jump straight to the recording. Open a note’s detail view to watch the linked recording inline — the video plays right there, positioned at the moment the note was written.
- Bookmark your setup. Preferences are stored in the URL — bookmark your settings to reopen it exactly as configured. Great for sharing.
